Deutung Und Bedeutung: Studies in German and Comparative Literature Presented to Karl-Werner Maurer

The purpose of this volume is to honour Karl-Werner Maurer on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Professor Maurer was educated in Tübingen and held academic posts at Dijon and in London, before joining the faculty of the University of Manitoba where he became Head of the German Department.
Professor Maurer brought to Manitoba an impressive range of interests together with the discipline of scholars like Hermann Schneider and Ernst Robert Curtius. He developed his own gift of teaching from which several generations of young scholars were to benefit. Twelve of the articles in this volume are by former students of K.-W. Maurer, and all four editors wrote dissertations under his direction.
Containing articles on art, on medieval, modern, and comparative literature and translation, this 'Festschrift' matches most appropriately a lifelong dedication to the Humanities and exemplifies the distinctive tradition of 'Germanistik' in the English-speaking world.
